February 2008 Archives

What's new this week? Running outside, that's what! And it seems to make all the difference in the world. I seem to be a lot faster off the treadmill, and I'm certainly less bored.

Weight
173lbs/78.5kg. Slowly but surely.

Last week I skipped Friday because I was lazy. This week, I'm skipping it because I'm in pain. I'm starting to wonder if the intermediate plan isn't a little too much for me.

spiderwick.jpgHeidi, Brynn and I love to read. If you live in America, this may come as a surprise to you. Then again, if you live in America, there's about a 50/50 chance that someone is reading this to you. Not to worry, we're not judging you. We just think you're stupid.

A few weeks ago I bought The Spiderwick Chronicles for our daughter. There were five "books" in all. When I say books, I mean hard bound chapters. For sixty bucks. Given that each one took about half an hour to read, I didn't really feel like I got a whole lot of bang for my buck.

The story was enjoyable enough, although clearly designed for a younger audience. Brynn loves the books and has read each several times. By the time each of us had turned the last page, you can imagine how excited she was to see the movie.

Unfortunately, the movie and the books had practically nothing in common. They added new things that didn't help the story and left out a lot of the original elements that kept us reading in the first place. What we were left with was a half-assed Hollywood formula movie that could have been a hell of a lot better.

This isn't the first time. Eragon, The Golden Compass, Stardust and dozens of others are just a few of the fine literary accomplishments that have been twisted into horrible cinematic train wrecks. Oh, ok. Stardust was still pretty fun. But the stories didn't need any fundamental changes. They were good as they were. Hell they were great. It baffle$ me how anyone could let $omeone el$e $o gro$$ly mangle their life'$ work. Then again, I $uspect I have a price, too.
Wow, two months already! The runs are getting longer, but I'm sure as  hell not getting any skinnier. Not that I expected to this fast. Nope, if this has any chance of working at all, I'm going to have to stay with it for the long haul.

Even training for the marathon, I didn't really lose any weight. I did trim up pretty well though. Even though the race I'm training for is much shorter than a marathon, I'm training a lot harder. Hopefully it pays off.

And now for confession time. I was supposed to run four miles today, but I got home late and was tired. I had a beer and played a video game instead. How's that for dedication?

Good news! You thought you had run out of ways to make people think you're a dork  stay pure. Not so, my friends. Someone on the interwebs is selling belt buckles that practially guarantee you'll never get laid!

No really. Link.

It's amazing what you can do with just ten dollars if you time it well. Right after Christmas, when no one is even thinking about ever eating turkey again, Heidi bought a sixteen pound bird and threw it in the freezer.

We've had it thawing in the fridge for about a dozen days now, and tonight she finally made her way to our oven. Thanksgiving dinner isn't bad at all in February, especially when you don't have the added pressure of a million relatives to complicate it.

Because we can, we put a bottle of Clos du Bois 2006 Sauvignon Blanc in the fridge to chill at about the same time as we started the turkey in the oven. I don't know if that's technically right, but we opened the bottle just before dinner, and it tasted great.

We tried this wine for the first time with Heidi's shrimp scampi and loved it. The dry citrus flavor blended equally well with the turkey, stuffing and garlic potatoes we ate tonight. The cleanup on the other hand, was a different story. As we finished our last bites and moved on to the dishes Heidi said, "Now I remember why I don't make turkey very often. This sucks!"

I'll take that as my queue to go help.

Big Fat Friday: Chapter 7

Ok, I know today isn't Friday, but Heidi and I went to a comedy club last night with some friends, so I didn't  have time to post. I worked hard this week though.

Weight
174lbs/79kg. Positive progress! Hooray!

Snow Bird

This one's for you, Al Gore.

DSC_0424SnowBird.jpg

It has now been snowing since 3:30 this afternoon in what I'm pretty sure is the BILLIONTH fucking snowstorm of this never-ending winter. As I looked out the window at the buckets of fluffy stuff falling from the sky, it got me thinking about just one thing—global warming.

snowAndTree.jpgHere in Utah, it's not altogether too uncommon to meet the owner of a hybrid car who is also the proud parent of seven or more children. I doubt that this is unique to my home state, as there are plenty of fundy hyperbreeders to be found all around the world. But what I want to know is, am I the only one who finds this approach to saving the world ridiculously hypocritical?

Let's think about it for a minute. In one generation seven children will need seven new homes that likely haven't been built yet. They'll need seven to fourteen new cars that they'll drive to work every day. Their families will consume massive amounts of diapers, toys, televisions, computers, food, water, heating gas and electricity. But somehow it's all cool. You're driving a hybrid.

Do you really want to save the environment? Great. Try using the single most powerful tool for environmental preservation known to man: birth control.

Update (2/16/2008): Al Gore has four children. Al Gore has gigantic houses and heated pools. You do the math. And I'm not impressed just because he won a prize from the same people who thought Yasser Arafat was a model for peace.
Much better this week.

Weight
176lbs/80kg. Oops. I'm going to call that a one pound increase in muscle mass.

Two notes for this week. First, you'll notice that I only did weights once. Or maybe you won't notice. Or maybe you will now that I said you won't. At any rate, my shoulder feels like it's right on the edge of an injury, so I''m going to let it heal before I put any more stress on it. I got a little carried away on the butterflies Tuesday.

Second, the new picture a week is proving a little inconvenient for my lazy arse, so I'm downgrading to occasional photos when I feel like it. Besides, I'm sure it's going to be months before there's any visible change. I may as well make it dramatic.

JR Screen Ruler

Do you ever find yourself wishing you had a convenient way to measure elements on your computer screen? Of course you don't. YOU have a life.

Well, let me bring this home for you. Let's say you have a picture of some famous busty Hollywood celebrity you want to add to your blog, but you're just not sure if there's enough room for her ample bosom in the space you have.

jrulerBosom.gifEnter JR Screen Ruler. It's a nifty little freeware app that lets you measure pixels, inches, picas or centimeters on your screen. For the record, looks like she's about 185px DD, give or take a few pixels. Ladies, lest ye judge me as sexist, it works on guys, too:

I got a new camera yesterday! Not just any new camera, but the new camera.

walkInTheSnow.jpgIt's a good thing I started taking pictures with it yesterday though. This morning yet another winter storm moved in, and this was the best picture i could get from the back window.

I know, I know. You probably all think I'm kidding. Not so much. Here's what the driveway looks like right now. What you're looking at is about a three two feet of snow over my driveway. I probably can't even get out in the 4WD, and it's still snowing.

Much better this week.

Weight
175lbs/79kg. Still.

Technical Difficulties

Sorry for the down time yesterday. Looks like about twenty-five of you managed to make it through in spite of the server crapping out. I appreciate your dedication! Anyhow, I've talked to the ISP, and they assured me we'd be stable today. We'll see.
